“Literature is the art of discovering something extraordinary about ordinary people, and saying with ordinary words something extraordinary”

Boris Pasternak

At Southdale School our aim is to help children develop a love for the English language through the spoken and written word.

English is a one of the core subjects in the National Curriculum and a prerequisite for educational and social progress as it underpins the work undertaken in other areas of the curriculum. Confidence in basic language skills enables children to communicate creatively and imaginatively with the world at large in all situations. The acquisition of language skills is of the utmost importance therefore the teaching of all aspects English is given a high priority. We seek to ensure that all children achieve their full potential in all aspects of English.

At Southdale, we invest in the Oxford Reading Scheme to monitor our children’s reading at home. The variety of text genres allows the children to have a variety of rich reading materials and we also encourage our children to read beyond the scheme. If children are working below their chronological reading age, targeted intervention and support is put in place.

All children are encouraged to change their book at least once a week and ‘Book Changers of the Week’ are common in most classrooms!
